Yaz for Acne

Yaz® (drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol) is an oral contraceptive used by women. It is primarily used for preventing pregnancy but is also approved to treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Healthcare providers may also prescribe Yaz for acne treatment in women who desire contraception.
Acne is a common skin condition. Causes of acne can vary, but many cases are caused or worsened by hormones, particularly male hormones (known medically as androgens). Drospirenone, one of the hormones in Yaz, works against androgens, which is why acne may respond to Yaz.
The contraceptive is appropriate for treating acne in women who also want to take a birth control pill. If you do not desire contraception, other types of acne treatment may be more appropriate.
